Advocates to Bring Provocative Film to Capital Region March 19
Advocates for Welcoming Congregations will hold two free showings of the award-winning documentary For the Bible Tells Me So at 7:15and 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19 at the Madison Theater, 1036 Madison Avenue (off South Main Avenue) in Albany. Seating will be first come, first served for the Capital Region premiere of this 2007 film.
Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very American families -- including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopalian Bishop Gene Robinson -- director Dan Karslake explores how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child.
Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, For the Bible Tells Me So offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.
Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Seattle International Film Festival, For the Bible Tells Me So is described as a provocative, entertaining documentary that brilliantly reconciles homosexuality and Biblical scripture, and in the process reveals that Church-sanctioned anti-gay bias is based almost solely upon a significant (and often malicious) misinterpretation of the Bible.
Advocates for Welcoming Congregations is a local interfaith group that seeks full membership for gay, lesbian bisexual and transgender (GLBT) persons in our communities of faith, according to spokesman Rev. Anthony Green of the United Church of Christ in Albany. "We are people of faith, clergy and congregants, gay and straight, men and women," said Rev. Green. "We hope that by bringing this film to the Capital Region we will help congregations and families to approach this sensitive subject and important conversation. All spiritual seekers should have a community that nurtures spiritual growth by being welcoming, affirming and inclusive."
Advocates for Welcoming Congregations works to:
· Make the role of faith more visible in the GLBT community.
· Maintain a listing of welcoming congregations in the Capital Region.
· Promote dialogue on the inclusion of members of the GLBT community in communities of faith.
· Offer guidance to congregations on how to be more fully welcoming.
· Support networking and information sharing on related issues among clergy and congregants.
